A Family Legacy

Every legacy has a beginning. For Sarah’s family, it started with her great-uncle, Conrad Huerta. After serving our country in the Korean War, Conrad returned home to pursue a degree in education. He was among the first students to enroll in graduate courses at Chadron State College and went on to become the first Latino Superintendent of Schools in the state of Nebraska. His impact left a lasting impression on Sarah.

Sarah draws inspiration from her grandmother, Rita Garcia. As a child, she spent a great deal of time in the South Omaha community alongside her. Rita served as the Director of the Indian Chicano Health Center (now known as OneWorld), where she made a meaningful impact through her leadership and service. She consistently went above and beyond to support families in the community, providing home visits, rides to appointments, running errands, whatever was needed, Rita was there to lend a helping hand.

Through these experiences, Sarah learned firsthand the difference one can make by being present and actively engaged in the community. She also developed a deep appreciation for helping others by working alongside people, not above them.
